Discord hacked. Sensitive information of over 70,000 users leaked; including ID photos

Thought this was worth posting since Gelbooru has a Discord server.

Discord has been hacked; and sensitive data of 70,000 people have been leaked. However, some sources have stated 2.1 million users, while Discord itself and others have reported only 70,000 users were affected. These data leaks included government ID photos, drivers licenses, phone numbers, emails, IP addresses, questions asked to the helpdesk, user reports, and face photos taken for age verification purposes.

Discord recently enforced a thing, following the recent UK shitstorm, where if you're in certain areas like UK or Australia, you must scan a photo of your face in order to access NSFW content.

Discord falsely claimed that these sensitive photos, alongside photos of your drivers license and government ID, were deleted directly after they confirmed you weren't a child. However, this is a shitty fucking lie considering that these photos were found, leaked, and used to extort users, which should've been physically impossible if they were actually "deleted".

What a shitty, scummy app. I am so glad I deleted my discord years ago, and have never looked back.

Despite the clickbait headlines it wasn't discord that was hacked it was a third party ID verification provider they use, it's literally spelled out in the first sentence of Discord's press release.
It isn't surprising that the info isn't deleted after verification, someone would need to code the system to delete things and that costs money. There's little risk of both a government doing anything to force compliance with deletion requirements and those that got their deets exposed suing due to the stigma of adult content so why bother hiring coders to make and maintain the system when you could put that money towards executive bonuses.

Though it doesn't win me the $10 bet I have about there being a hack of one of those ID verifiers that exposes over 100k users before the end of 2025.

I really hate these ID Verification systems, especially thanks to the absolute tech illiterate boomer politicians we have shoving this down people's throats even though NOBODY asked for them. Good thing it's trivially easy to bypass these systems by just switching on a VPN.

The reason why they don't delete them is probably to prevent fraud (as cited in privacy policies) or to give some of that information to third party brokers like your DoB, which city you're born in and other info available. Like why do you need my entire passport or DL when you only need to answer a 'yes or no' question if a person is 18+ or not? At least credit card verification is the least intrusive since it's basically the same as a payment through your bank and has the proper security of one but not every adult has a credit card.

I wish more people used platforms like Element and Telegram. They don't have the "roles" feature discord has, and I don't think they integrate at all with paysites like patreon or subscribestar, but damn if they don't have the weird "happy huggy stuffy big bwuther is watching you uwu" feel as discord's tencent owned ass.

That's my fight exactly. I just can't get my friends off of Discord. They know it's not exactly private, but they still think it's "good enough".
