A high-powered air gun, maybe? Then again, it makes no sense why such a gun would fire a bullet with the casing and primer attached, what with the excess weight and all. Perhaps his opponent is using some sort of power involving kinetic excitation. Or, most likely, the artist has never fired a gun before. (By the looks of the throat on that sheath, he's probably never owned a sword either.)
