The protagonist, James Burton (Later, Aoba anoa in an alternate universe) pilots the Interstellar starfighter known as Vic Viper (or the Metalion, depending on the game) whose mission is to protect defend Planet Gradius and save the galaxy from the many threats of the planet-morphing Bacterion and Venom, the longest-recurring enemy of the series. (among others such as Salamander, Gofer and Black Viper.) Though the pilot is usually never seen or heard, The ship itself is always shown in great detail, often with Multiple (sometimes called Option), a glowing gun drone that follows the ship for support fire in tandem. The original game debuted in the arcades in 1985. The final bosses in the series are often surprisingly easy in contrast to the general difficulty of the rest of the game. Parodius and Otomedius can be considered more light hearted and comedic spin-offs of this franchise though they have no plot connection to each other.
