VSS rifle fires subsonic 9x39mm cartridge adapted from 7.62x39mm fired by AK rifle. Technically is not assault rifle because does not have automatic fire capability. Rifles AS Val and SR-3 Vikhr very similar to VSS rifle but with automatic fire capability. Russia designate VSS rifle as special sniper rifle, but 9x39mm chambering designate it as carbine of intermediate cartridge.
