It is known as Sonic World Adventure in Japan. It begins with Sonic, once again, battling Eggman and it appears that the hedgehog, in his Super Sonic form, is about to win as usual when Eggman springs a trap on Sonic. Eggman uses a powerful ray that drains the power of the Chaos Emeralds forcibly turning Sonic back into his normal form and proceeds to turn him into a werewolf like version of himself. Eggman uses the energy harnessed by the ray to fire a beam at the planet below and unleash a powerful being known as Dark Gaia. Sonic is ejected out of Eggman's spaceship and plummets to the planet below. Sonic survives the drop and when the sun rises, he reverts back into his normal form. He realizes that at night he will become a werewolf like creature, but he is less concerned with the transformation than he is with stopping Eggman's latest plot. Sonic soon meets a friendly amnesiac creature who Sonic decides to name Chip. Sonic travels around the world with Chip to fix the Chaos Emeralds and recover Chip's memory. After two darker and more serious entries in the series, this game adopts a more lighthearted atmosphere. Its sequels would increase the amount of tongue-in-cheek humor. The game features two different styles of play, 3D platforming for the daytime levels, and a 3d beat em up for the nighttime levels. The game's environments are based off of real world countries. It also alters the designs of the human characters, giving them more exaggerated and cartoonish designs as opposed to the relatively realistic appearances of humans in previous 3D Sonic games. The game has an unusually large emphasis on food, and much of the food is also based off of the cuisine of the various real world countries that inspired the locations in the game. While the game had a better reception than its predecessor Sonic 2006, this game was still controversial, receiving mixed reviews from critics who often criticized the beat em up sections of the game. At the same time, the daytime levels proved to be highly popular and subsequent 3D Sonic games, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations, followed the level design style established by this game and received a more generally positive reception. The game's more lighthearted tone was also preserved by the sequels. The game was still a commercial success and sold 2.45 million copies by the end of 2008. The daytime portions of Rooftop Run were chosen to represent Sonic Unleashed for Sonic Generations. Egg Dragoon was also used as a boss fight in Sonic Generations.
