It is unusual in that it is not a launch title despite being a Mario platformer. It is directed by Koizumi Yoshiaki and Usui Kenta and produced by Miyamoto Shigeru and Tezuka Takashi. Music is composed by Kondo Koji. Mario decides to take a vacation to Isle Delfino along with Peach and her butler Toadsworth. Unfortunately, their vacation is soon interrupted once they arrive. The island is covered in strange goop and Mario is accused of being responsible for the island's pollution. Mario and Peach are unable to prove his innocence and Mario as punishment must clean up the island. He teams up with the robotic water gun/jetpack FLUDD to clean up the island and find the true culprit. The gameplay style is the same as Super Mario 64, but the game is built around FLUDD and the abilities it offers Mario. As the game is entirely set on an island, every level has a tropical island flavor. The player can also see the other levels in the background, which is a detail unique to this Mario game. The game notably introduced Bowser Jr, who would become a recurring character in the series. It also introduces Toadsworth and the Pianta race who would reappear in subsequent Mario games like Paper Mario RPG. Petey Piranha, the first boss of the game, also appears in many spinoffs of the Mario series and is even the first boss of the Subspace Emissary mode in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
