Other Metroid variations include the "Adult Metroid" [Looks like a squid] (MP), "Fission Metroid" (MP), "Dark Metroid" (MP2E), and the "Phazon Metroid" (MP3C). Oh, and don't forget Metroid Prime himself!

The variations and mutations seen in Prime is explained by the presence of Phazon in their environment, and the fact that they are in another planet, which automatically changes their physiology in some way.
The image here represents the Metroids' natural evolution, the way the Chozo designed them to be.
