The manga debuted in 1998 and it was adapted into an anime by Gainax in 2001. The anime spanned two seasons and concluded before the manga and gave the story its own ending. The manga's ending is somewhat similar in some respects, but very different in certain details. Combat android Andou Mahoro, who is nearly indistinguishable from a regular human, has been fighting aliens for years and has developed a reputation as a powerful warrior, but androids do not live or last as long as humans. The organization Vesper, which created her, is indebted to her and rewards her by allowing her to spend the last 398 days of her life however she wishes. Mahoro decides to move into the Misato household as a maid to help take care of the fourteen year old Misato Suguru whose father, a well-respected military commander, she was forced to kill during a battle with the aliens. Although Misato Suguru has a close knit group of friends, he still feels a sense of loneliness as he no longer has any parents and lives alone in the household. He has called for a maid to help clean up his messy house. Mahoro's arrival changes things and he and Mahoro build an increasingly intimate relationship. Mahoro enjoys her time serving as Suguru's maid and Suguru reciprocates the feeling, but she is also painfully aware of how short her time left in the world is while Suguru is blissfully ignorant of this. Furthermore, Mahoro can not give up fighting entirely as enemies soon appear that threaten both Mahoro and Suguru's lives. Both the manga and anime often alternate between wacky and fan service heavy comedic antics and pathos; every chapter/episode, even the goofiest ones, concludes with a visual reminder of how many days Mahoro has left to live. The series also features explicit nudity with female characters having their nipples shown clearly.
