I think it's because of the parallels between TP and ALttP.

In the former, he transforms into a wolf, the sacred beast of legend, while in ALttP, the Dark World transforms you into an image that resides deep within your heart, and Link becomes a PINK bunny. So there, yeah...er...rant over....
