Actually it's a reference...
The original NGE used a cover of Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon" (although they had a Japanese girl sing it in the ED theme, not Frankie himself), and one of the lyrics is "in other words, darling kiss me"...so it needs context or some people won't get it.

Yeah, we all kinda' get it. No need to explain. Plus the NGE ending version was sung by many different people, including Hayashibara Megumi and others. And the ultimate line is "In other words: `I love you`"
