Believe it or not, this is cannon. The subject was briefly discussed (and confirmed) in the first season when Ash caught his Crabby. (he was worried Prof. Oak would eat it.)

I'm pretty sure it was discussed in the first game, as well - something like Farfetch'd being nearly extinct because people thought they were so tasty. Dunno if the same holds true for Lapras being nearly extinct.

To add to the pile of cannonicity: a D/P pokedex entry for Magikarp drops a note that it's customary to CATCH IT, EAT IT (obv cook at own discretion), THEN RETURN ITS BONES TO THE WATERS FROM WHENCE YOU COUGHT IT WHILE GIVING THANKS.

What happens to the Magikarp count........? Apparantly this ritual reincarnates Magikarp or something, because they do come back. Keep it in mind the next time you use your Gyarados..... 0.0

Oddly there is some normal fish that can be spotted in the water in some of the episodes. Don't know if this is a mistake or not by the artist, but it does appear that there is some normal animals within the Pokemon world.

they do have animals how else does in say pikachu is a moouse pokemon? if they have no animals they dont know what a mouse is,

There are a number of example of real animals in the pokemon universe. You can even see normal real world fish in the water in some episodes, such as "The Joy of Pokemon".

A dog has also been pictured on a poster before, and animals are talked about semi-frequently, mostly to compare them to pokemon.

There are other examples, i just can't remember them all.
