The people who threw death threats at artists because, gasp, they drew straight 2hu fanart. The type that disregard the actual sexuality of a character to pair them with somebody they would never be into, and then claim that they "fixed" it. It's really bad on twitter because I see people lose their marbles over straight shipping and heterosexual fan art. Even worse if the character's sexuality is ambigious, or is assumed to be straight.

Or they'll just change the gender of a character.
For example, the Commander of Azur Lane is male, at least in the English version, anyway. They use male pronouns. I doubt it would be different in the Japanese version, though, since nearly everything we see of Commander from Japan is male. However, there are a small minority who will make Commander female, specifically so that they can do yuri.
This is also why I say AL teases the yuri fandom, because a female Commander was even used in at least one chapter of the AL anthology books which, while not canon, are an officially licensed and produced work.

You know what could possibly be an ample solution to all of this? Being able to choose the gender of the self-insert character. Male for straight, Female for yuri.
Choose the age of the commander, too. Adult, teen, or shota. Maybe add skin tone, hair color, and haircut options while you're at it, too.
Now everyone gets their wish!
