The hiragana is easy. Just switch the keyboard to Japanese and they are easy to write if you know even just a little bit of how to read hiragana.

Kanji on the other hand is tricky. I tried getting my scanner software to read them, but I never managed to get it working. If anybody know how to do image->text conversion with Kanji support, then please enlighten us ^^

I always just write it out, since I have a tablet PC. Makes things easier, since even if you don't know how to pronounce it, if you still know how to write pretty much any Far Eastern language, you can write down the character.
