No, it's not a joke. It's the ORIGINAL Japanese and therefore CORRECT gender. American Nintendo is quite more conservative when it goes to non-hereto themes. www.mariowiki.com/Vivian#Gender

It depends upon the artist. I have heard from 3 sources on this so listen close.
Source 1: "Bob", says when he draws he tries to capture a breed of realism that is unique and follows the story of a subject, in an attempt to bring out the most true and raw element of the art. Thus, he informs me, he studies a subject before he draws it. In his eyes, it's the ORIGINAL that matters.
Source 2: "Tom", says when he creates art it is for entertainment, that when he shares it, it is for the person viewing it to enjoy, however they may perceive it. In his eyes, artist's intention means nothing. Art is in the eye of the AUDIENCE.
Source 3: "fukifiknow", claims that she draws for herself. When she hits the canvas she does it for no one else, but it is a matter of personal pride to hear someone say they like her work, and she hates it when someone tells her she did it wrong. She says that "art is a form of expression, not to be picked at but something to be proud of". To her, art belongs to the ARTIST, regardless of what the viewer thinks.
This is information taken directly from three differant artists, changed to my own words, with names removed. Source 3 asked me to write her name as "fukifiknow" as a joke. I was simply doing as I was asked, I apologize if anyone is offended.
My own opinion is that we are English, and this site is English, therefore all things herein should be interpreted from an English viewpoint.

Except, we're talking about tags here. To some, Vivian is a trap, to those that don't know about the jap version though, vivian is a she. We can't put both since it would be contradictory. Since vivian is a trap in the original and this is a site for japanese hentai, also since nowhere is it stated that vivian was drawn as a genderswitch or futanari, we have to accept that vivan is a boy. Furthermore it wouldn't matter if artist 3 drew the color red and said it was blue. It wouldn't change the fact that vivan is male if said artist said he was a she.

Here's an Idea, rather than argue whether Vivian's a guy or girl, how bout a compromise? Hermaphrodite.(Or Futanari if you're more familiar with THAT term)

Original ≠ Correct.
Japanese Vivian is trans.
American Vivian is female.
Goku's power level is over 9000.
Etc.
