The gameplay still works like the old games with the hero X gaining the powers of the bosses he defeats and having the ability to tackle the levels in any order, except for the last few. This series heroes, X and Zero, have become popular in their own right. Zero has received a sequel series that focuses on him called Rockman Zero and has appeared in Capcom crossovers like Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Marvel vs Capcom 3. Not to be confused with Rockman 10. The X in the title is a reference to the hero's name as opposed to the Roman numeral for 10.
