A psychological horror movie directed by Kon_Satoshi and written by Murai Sadayuki and based on the novel by Takeuchi Yoshikazu. The soundtrack was composed by Ikumi Masahiro. The film was animator Kon's directorial debut and breakthrough as a director. It premiered on August 5, 1997. It tells the story of Kirogoe Mima, an idol singer, who decides to take her career in a new and mature direction by becoming a serious actress. This decision alienates some of her fans and especially one stalker known as Me Mania. Things get worse for Mima once she plays a character in a TV series who is gang-raped and some members of the production crew are gruesomely murdered. These experiences cause Mima to become increasingly uncertain of what is real and what isn't. The film was originally intended to be a live action film, but the production studio was damaged during the 1995 Kobe Earthquake and it became an anime instead. The film is very different from the original novel due to Kon and Murai feeling that sticking close to the original novel would not make for a good movie. The film is notable for its use of very abrupt scene transitions as Mima spirals downward into madness, blurring the line between reality and fantasy which became a recurring theme in Kon's work. The live action movie Black Swan can be considered a spiritual successor to this movie and its director has paid homage to Perfect Blue (the bathtub scene) in his previous movie, Requiem for a Dream.
