Tights Glossary
Tights
A stretchy garment made of nylon or polyurethane that tightly covers the body from the toes to the waist. mainly used for protection against the cold, fashion, ballet, and gymnastics. Some types can be classified as pants.
Denier
A unit of fabric thickness in tights. A 9000 meter thread with a mass of 1 gram is 1 denier. Tights are generally said to be 30 denier or higher, but there are exceptions.
Nylon-polyurethane
The name of the chemical fiber that makes up tights. A yarn made by wrapping an uncoated nylon yarn around an elastic polyurethane yarn is called a "support yarn". If the nylon yarn to be wrapped is single-wrapped, it is called single-covering yarn; if it is double-wrapped, it is called double-covering yarn.
Nude Toe
The lack of toe reinforcement in tights. This works well for showing off things like pedicures. Some varieties have a reinforcement that functions similar to a run guard.
Elastic Waistband
Literally "waist gum"
Rubber at the waist of the tights. There is a type with a relaxed stomach that does not include this.
Center Seam
The seam from the waist to the crotch of the tights. Some have a diamond-shaped crotch and some do not.
Diamond Gusset
Diamond-shaped seam in the crotch area. This prevents the tights from slipping down and allows them to fit securely.
Run Guard
This helps prevent a run in the tights. It is at the top, because tights often run from the top down when wearing them. It is usually connected to the crotch area. Tights without run guards are called "all-through" types. All-throughs are more fasionable than those with run guards, but are less durable.
