Well, kind of, anon 2. The way that base 9 works is that the number 9 and all multiples thereof don't exist; therefore, every 9 numbers, you add 1 to the solution. We therefore take 7x4, for example; in base ten, the answer is 28. However, in base 9, we skip 9, 18, and 27 -- essentially, they don't exist. Therefore, the product of 4x7 is 31 -- and she was indeed correct.
