0 HP is KO, not death. Just like in most JRPGs.

By the way, in this one, unlike in typical RPGs, they make it extra obvious by, after a wipe, the characters commenting on how they lost and should be more careful next time after respawn. Normally you need to actually pay attention to flavor text and the like to see that.
