I know we had two blimps that were aircraft carrier motherships. We also tried the same with a converted passenger plane. I wonder if tech has advanced enough to make motherships out of large aircraft with less problems or we have to wait longer still.

They used a trapeze style hook to grab the aircraft as it returned, catching it. Then they'd pull the airplane back into the ship. Apparently it didn't work very well though and was hard to do reliably.
They tried similar things on the B36 bomber after WWII, and the Soviet Zveno project was also a similar concept.
