This picture has always been a favorite for me.
I've always thought that that was Ike on the right, and I'm fairly sure it is. Still not sure if that's Link screwing around or Toon Link finding the disadvantages of being shorter than the water level.

I imagine if the boundary was broken, things would fit rather well, pairing-wise:

Mario and/or Luigi with Peach
Toon Link with Zelda
Ike with Lyn (same series, at least)
Snake with Samus
