Now Viewing: sonicTag type: Character Refers to any image featuring the character. The series he comes from is tagged sonic_the_hedgehog. He is a blue bipedal hedgehog blessed with super speed. He also has the ability to gain a super form if he collects all the emeralds, amplifying his already incredible speed and strength. The most iconic of these forms is Super Sonic which is reminiscent of the Super Saiyans from Dragon Ball, and is activated after Sonic gathers all Chaos Emeralds. His characterization varies depending on the source, but in the games he's generally portrayed as a cheerful, friendly, and fearless hero though he can be a wise-cracker at times. He is also emotionally stable. Even at the darkest moments in his life, he virtually never cries and he almost never stays angry at someone for long. However, he dislikes waiting around with nothing to do. If the player doesn't move Sonic for a bit, he will often tap his feet impatiently or express his impatience in other ways. In Sonic CD, spending too long motionless will cause Sonic to exclaim, "I'm outta here!" and leap off the level resulting in an instant game over! Sonic is also a skilled skater and there are quite a few levels involving Sonic skating on a board or grinding on rails. For all of his strengths and bravery, deep pools of water are famously an achilles heel for him because Sonic can't swim (in the swimming games from Mario and Sonic Olympic Games, Sonic wears a life jacket to compete) and instead sinks to the bottom of the floor and in some of the 3d games, water is treated the same way as a bottomless pit. In the underwater sequences, Sonic must get air bubbles to replenish his oxygen as he continues to make his way to the end of the level. However, in some levels, Sonic can override this weakness and can go fast enough to run on water. He is close friends with Miles 'Tails' Prower who functions as his sidekick. Amy Rose is in love with him. Although Sonic doesn't dislike her, he is often exasperated with her persistent pursuit of his affections. He has a sort of rivalry/friendship with Knuckles and Shadow. His character design was changed in Sonic Adventure and subsequent games have kept his appearance in that game. Sonic Generations explains the change in appearance as Sonic growing older and becoming a teenager. Sonic actually made his debut in a small cameo in the 1991 Sega arcade racing game Rad Mobile. In said game, he was depicted as an air freshener, and his cameo functioned as a teaser for his first real game, Sonic the Hedgehog 1. After the success of his first game, quite a few subsequent platformers starred a funny and cool animal protagonist in an attempt to recapture his unique appeal; Sonic is more or less the only one of these characters to have lasting popularity and this trend has slowed down after the 90s. Like how Mario is Nintendo's mascot, Sonic is Sega's, and Sonic replaced Alex Kidd in this role. In his early games, Sonic didn't talk largely due to technological limitations though he did say one phrase in Sonic CD, "I'm outta here!" This silence is preserved in Sonic Generations; Classic Sonic does not utter a single word or exclamation throughout the whole game and expresses himself through body language and facial expressions. Sonic Adventure gave Sonic full blown voice acting. In the Japanese voice track of the Sonic games and Sonic X, Sonic tends to make English exclamations; his seiyuu Kanemaru Junichi was actually an English teacher. Unlike Mario, who is limited to a few phrases and exclamations, Sonic is given as much dialogue as the other characters. He made his Super Smash Bros. debut with Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He is the fastest character in the game; with a bunny hood on, he is fast enough to outrun the cars on the Big Blue stage. His fighting style is also notably confusing since many of his attacks have the same start up animation of him spinning. Sonic went through quite a few concept designs before Sonic Team settled on the final designs of a blue bipedal hedgehog. Two of his concept designs would evolve to become the characters Dr. Eggman and Mighty the Armadillo with the latter still bearing a strong resemblance to Sonic. The design and color scheme of Sonic's shoes was inspired by both Santa Claus and Michael Jackson's boots and the cover of his album Bad. From Sonic Adventure onwards, he is closely associated with upbeat rock themes, reflecting his adventurous and optimistic personality. He also appears in the Disney movie Wreck-it Ralph. He also has the honor of having a gene named after him. He is voiced by Utoku_Keiko (Sonic CD), Kanemara_Junichi (Sonic Adventure onwards, and Sonic X anime), Kikuchi_Masami (1993 OVA), and Seki_Tomokazu (Sonic Unleashed werewolf form). In the English dubs of his games, he is voiced by Ryan Drummond (1998-2004), Jason Griffith (2005-2010), and Roger Craig Smith (2010-present) In Western animation, he is voiced by Jaleel White and his singing voice in Sonic Underground is provided by Samuel Vincent.
