The first game was directed by Kamiya_Hideki, the same man behind Devil May Cry, which this game could be considered a spiritual successor of, and like that game it is filled with over the top action and the player is encouraged to pull off spectacular combos. Kamiya even played half of Devil May Cry 4 as part of his preparation for this game. The game often devotes an entire chapter to its major boss battles due to their length although the game also has many comparatively smaller scale boss fights. Like Devil May Cry, it is also quite difficult despite starring an extremely powerful protagonist as even the minor enemies show little mercy to the player. The game is also the first game Kamiya directed that is not affiliated with Capcom. The game features numerous references to both past works created by Kamiya_Hideki as well as Sega games and even includes remixes of classic Sega arcade game tunes in its soundtrack. The game and its combat was designed to have a more feminine and sexy feel with Bayonetta herself representing the direction of the game. When Bayonetta is injured, rose petals come out of her body instead of blood and the game's targeting cursor is represented by a set of red lip marks, like a kiss. The game's soundtrack is filled with many songs with female vocals to give the game a more feminine tone to suit the protagonist. It is also quite tongue in cheek in tone, and is loaded with a lot of sexual innuendo. It was originally released on Oct. 9 2009 in Japan for the Xbox 360, and it was later ported to the PS3. There is no Japanese dub for the game. Even in the original Japanese version, the dialogue is all in English. Besides English, the game uses the real life language Enochian, said to be the language of Angels. Bayonetta and Jeanne use this language for their summons. Their incantations remain un-subtitled. The Angels exclusively speak in this language, but their dialogue is subtitled. The characters were designed by Shimazaki_Mari who has also worked on Okami with Kamiya Hideki. The game's cutscenes are directed by Shimomura Yuji. Hashimoto Yusuke designed the game's enemies and would go on to direct the game's sequel. Bayonetta is a powerful witch who heads to the city of Vigrid to search for someone who holds the 'Right Eye,' which is part of the 'Eyes of the World.' She is informed that said person can help her recover her memories. As Bayonetta battles armies of evil angels and a fellow witch named Jeanne, she gradually recovers her memories and discovers that the truth of the whole situation is more complicated. Kamiya Hideki has also posted a play through (Japanese with English subtitles) of the game done by himself on the Platinum Games Website. It also doubles as a creator commentary on the game as he provides information on the behind-the-scenes development of the game. However, the XBOX360 version is generally regarded as superior even by the creators themselves due to the PS3 version suffering from framerate issues. The PS3 port was handled by other developers, a decision that Platinum Games came to regret with Kamiya calling it the biggest mistake he made in his career and the company vowing to not let other companies port their games to other systems. Nevertheless, the PS3 port still sold plenty of copies. Despite the numerous Sega references within this game, Platinum Games and Sega's relationship seems to have become strained and the game's sequel is published by Nintendo who also published the 2013 Platinum Games' The Wonderful 101 for Wii U. Bayonetta 2 is also being exclusively released for the Nintendo Wii U. Bayonetta went on to appear in fourth Super Smash Bros. game as a playable fighter, making her the second character, behind Solid Snake, from a more adult-targeted video game franchise to appear alongside characters from more family friendly games. Her stage is based off of the opening falling clock tower battle from the original Bayonetta. The game received an anime film adaptation by Gonzo on November 23, 2013. The anime is directed by Kizaki Fuminori with characters designed by Yokoyama_Ai. The voice acting is in Japanese unlike the original game. It has also been adapted into a manga written and drawn by Sakakibara_Mizuki.
