I like to imagine that Mei had a boyfriend or some kind of lover among her crew in Antarctica and that he died in a particularly awful way (maybe the freezing tube miscalculated and he was actually subjected to being encased in regular, non-cryo ice while he was still conscious) that Mei had to deal with. >:)
