You can make more than one type of anime series out of a franchise, whether it's more kid-friendly to more mature, or more mature to more kid-friendly. That doesn't change its roots at all.

Even something as dark, mature, gore-filled, etc. like Higurashi no Naku Koro ni made a more light-hearted, even kid-friendly series down the road that was much more cute, moe, comedic, etc.

i do believe that higuarashi no naku isn't meant for kids no matter how much kids-friendly part it has. i do also believe that kids doesn't have to watch a mixed bag of anime where mature and children theme get fusioned together. after all pokemon anime is created to appeals kids which supposed to be gamefreak target demigraphic. and the report that viewers at japan dislike the serious,shonen oriented xy anime doesn't help at all. hence they "dumbed" down the anime in sun and moon.
