Using Shadow Ball against a Dark-type?

Why is the champion of the region making the dumb decisions?

leejune : then again ever since the very first season, types have rarely made any sense, instead good-looking does. Remember water-types get burned to crisps by Charizard ? Even the short mini-series with Red has it too, with his own Charizard fire-blasting Blue's Blastoise. But at least said mini-series were still a bit closer to the games as you could feel Charizard leveling up in-fight.

Remember WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back in gen 1 when Misty beat that kid's Weepinbell at the school? They flat out said typing doesn't matter that much. Skill and strategy do, and I'm honestly glad it's that way. If everything tried to be 100% like the games, battles would be a lot more predictable and boring

I agree LG_Negi that, for an anime, it should be a bit loose about mecanics compared to a video game, and thuse i too welcome the choice made to favor strategy over actual types. Like late in Johto season when Ash used his Bayleef to defeat a Houndoom by closing its mounth with a vine whip move, that was smart. However, not that Fire still beats Grass, it's just that through their physiology, Bayleef made sure Houndoom was unable to use Grass at all. Strategy is just a way to win despite being in a situation the mecanics would describe as unfavorable.

What i've also seen that bugs me is sometimes so-called strategy would be used as an excuse to go against mecanics rather that go around them. Same fight, a bit later. We have 2 fire starters in their max form : Charizard versus Blaziken. Charizard got severly damaged by double kicks and burning kicks and a sky uppercut to the point of K.O. ? WTF ? Yes, Blaziken putting up a fair fight was to be expected, or even win, but at least make him win in a plausible way.

Knock him into the nearby rocks, causing the landscape to hurt him, that counts as strategy. But taking him down with what he's supposed to be resilient to, that's bullshit. Specially Burning Kick, since at the time the physicial/special aspect of attacks was directly linked to the type, meaning that at the time a fire attack would always be a special one. And from what i read here, Charizard has a stronger special defense than he has a physical defense (but both are good).

In the end, Charizard did not loose to Blaziken because Blaziken's trainer had a better strategy than Ash. Nope. It was the power of Love combined with the power of Scenario. And that's where i say it's bullshit.
