The little bit gay was the problem, because the show went away from more exciting issues. Like the drama of the protagonist in a two-timing relationship while he is saving world; that would have been fun to watch. But instead we get impractical nonsense about friendship. And the protagonist die and his used-to-be-enemy-just-turn-best-buddy turned into a kid, and everyone is immortal,
