Because said self centered jackass still goes leaps and bounds out of his way to help other people. Compared to the angry shrew, who grew up in a stable environment mind you, who goes out of her way to beat his skull in every chance she gets.

Ranmas problems can be explained and fixed. Akane on the otherhand, she has no excuse.

Shampoo best girl, she is manipulative but she can be also very sweet and self sacrificing, she is honest about wanting to get what she wants, and she is very much Ranma's own mirror because he can be just as manipulative as she is, and they both have a thing for honor.
