Okay, I'm not a farmer so maybe I just don't know any better, but I see a broken horseshoe, so I think that's kind of extreme.

I'm sure horseshoes missing and broken are the least of her concerns right now. Being raped, whipped and her horns shattered would be more traumatic. Fear of what will happen to her next, definitely. Horseshoes are just that, SHOES.

Don't worry, miss, I'll have you cut loose and out of here in short order. Once we're clear of this place then I'll treat you wounds before getting you home to your folks, okay?

Actually, @theherald, A horses shoes are what keeps their hooves from chipping and breaking. With out those shoes, they can't do a whole lot, because of the risk to their health with the hooves. So yes, Having her Horseshoes broken and missing is JUST AS traumatic as Her horns breaking or being whipped and raped, especially if the culpret who did said things also broke her horse shoes

Horseshoes are for the most part a matter of choice. They help protect soft hooves from hard ground, but hooves naturally toughen up with exposure to hard ground - so if the horse lives in the same place it gets ridden, you don't need them. It's also a question of work level - a horse used for cattle driving or endurance riding is probably going to need shoes, while a horse that isn't working all day can probably go without. The overwhelming majority of the horses in the world have never once worn shoes. We can speculate freely about why a centaur would need/want shoes, but they're simply not necessary for most real-world horses.

Now, a thrown shoe can cause traumatic stress to the leg and hoof due to uneven gait that results. I'd imagine a broken shoe would cause the same problem. If she hasn't been walking since they broke, though, chances are that she's been spared the worst aspect of uneven shoeing.

All that horse nerdity aside, shoes are made of steel, so mostly I'm just over here wondering how in the fuck someone managed to snap that right hind shoe clean in half.

Y'know, if she kicks you can say good bye to your spleen.

Then again, judging from the state of her hind hooves, maybe she already did? Maybe the bastards were armored?
