Now Viewing: TabascoTag type: Copyright A popular brand of hot sauce from Louisiana, made from Tabasco peppers fermented with salt in oak barrels for three years, before being strained and mixed out with distilled vinegar and then bottled. Recognizable for its typically small glass bottles full of the red sauce, featuring a diagonal white square label with red and green text, and green foil around the neck, then topped with a red twist cap. Most commonly sold in small 5oz glass bottles, but larger and smaller ones exist, including tiny 2oz glass bottles and large 1gal glass jugs, there's also a number of different variants available made from other sorts of chili peppers, such as Jalapeño and Habanero, which vary in color and label style. Because of its long shelf life and wide popularity, Tabasco sauce has frequently been included in American, British, Canadian, and Australian military field rations, at times in the tiny 2oz bottles, at other times in special foil packets, similar to ketchup. The love for Tabasco sauce with American troops especially dates back to the Vietnam war, where the bottles were a welcome present sent from home, many of the entries in the C-Ration menu of the time often being regarded as bland or outright unpleasant, benefiting from the addition of the sauce's strong flavor. The brand dates back to 1868, with the recipe for the main product remaining unchanged and with the bottle styled the same, the company having remained within the same family since.
