I have p4g on the vita and I find both of these characters, as well as a few others, so unlikable that it has prevented me from getting past 5 or 6 hours in.

Do the characters become more interesting later on or do they stay as insufferable as this throughout?

The characters in general get much more likeable as they develop with the story. Particularly if you do their social links, which provide great deals of character insight and development.
