It's because people still seem to have trouble understanding that being an artist is a job like any other- except that the pay is by no means steady. If people like their work, they'll have to pay if they want that artist to keep making it- otherwise, they'll have to quit and take up a regular job.

The problem with that is
1. Zelda isn't his character.
2. Art is very obviously a commission based job, (hence patron at all).
That's like becoming a musician and then being suprised your music got pirated. This is 2015, we all know it's going to happen.
