In a universe where being thrown can cause you to explode, colored squares can boost or debilitate you, or 12 people can stack on top of each other without the bottom person being crushed under the increased weight and also being able to throw them 3 to 6 spaces across a battlefield divided into squares. Someone holding a sword some way that SEEMS ineffective isn't really a strong argument as to why it would BE ineffective.
