^Actually, they do have a function.

The "feathers" are supposed to support the "AMBAC" of the Gundam. Basically, this supports the Gundam's ability to move in zero-gravity environments (Space) without the use of thrusters.

Otherwise, they also serve as part of the Gundam's two "Wing Shields" (multi-purpose wings, indeed).
