Yeah looking back I can't really excuse that comment.
But that link doesn't actually discount my point. It lists "release" as a meaning of the word, but it's obviously the metaphorical sense, since that definition also gives "exempt" "remit" and "let off." More importantly, I've found that dictionaries are often unhelpful as a translation aid compared to actual language examples, and I can't find a single one that uses 許す to mean literally "release."
Also in my experience, the word 放す is almost always used to mean "let go."
