how exactly is this fair? Its a dragon fairy type, so it auto loses a weakness, and with dragon type, it makes it resistant to pretty much everything but ice.

That's not good enough. Gyarados (a water dragon) is a flying type. Altaria (A bird) is a dragon type. tf gamefreak

Calvin3<This is the only pokemon that changes its Primary type on evolution. The primary type is the type listed first on the left. In all other evolution where there is a change in the typing, its always the type on the right side that changes.

As for the balace of this pokemon, Altaria is the Weakest Overall dragon type with a double weakness to ice. In gen 6 this poor pokemon is outclassed in all departments by other dragon pokemon. According to the info we have so far its atk/sp.a/def gets boosted and if anything, will just level out its stats to be more equal with its sp.d.
