Apparentley the guy who designed these was the main character designer for the Jak & Daxter games.
That explains the bandages at least.
Also the actual game looks like it could be fun

I honestly hate the redesigns. Knuckles looks bad... I mean he looks like would work better in a Crash Bandicoot game then a Sonic one. The bandages... horrible idea. Maybe just have a little wrapping around Knuckles wrists but to have everyone covered in them makes them look pretty bad. Amy no offense is now starting to look like Sonic's sister from that horrible Sonic Underground cartoon. Her looks just scream bad 90's cartoon now. Sonic too, he's the main hero and yet they make him look more like some young kid. Sonic is the main hero, he doesn't deserve a de-aging! Though... yeah to much bandages. Tails ironically is the only one decent. I can't complain minus... you guessed it. Bandages. On his boots. Why? Just why?

The actual gameplay itself looked surprisingly cool, I just don't see the need for these butt-ugly redesigns. Especially Knuckles. By the way has anybody noticed Amy is standing in Rouge's character design pose from Sonic Adventure 2? Same facial expression and everything.
