on the side of being the amputee, there's the feeling of being completely helpless and having to rely on the utter security and trust of the person you're with.
on the side of being with the amputee, there's the feeling of being in complete control, taking pity on them (although some amputees wouldn't want pity), caring for them, and making them feel good when others would shun them.
