The point is that Echidna, from Greek mythology, was the literal mother of monsters. Different Greek writers recorded her as having different offspring, but she's been mentioned as the mother of Cerberus, the Sphinx, the Lernean Hydra (killed by Herakles/Hercules as one of his Twelve Labors), the Nemean Lion (same), the Caucasian Eagle (who ate Prometheus' liver every day)...So the connection with "giving birth to different varieties of monstergirl" is obvious.
