So your telling me they live in their own bubble and are oblivious of how they look from the rest of the human races? The way you say it makes it sound like they see a different reality than others, one where they all look blonde with big blue eyes. Well no, I don't think the reason is that they aren't conscious of it.
I know what you mean, designing wise,it is all about aesthetics, but I think that, in the end, it just reflects their need to approach to a certain "ideal" on how they'd like to look like. It also explain all those things like, the lens that make the eyes look bigger, and the plastic surgerys so common now in asians countries it's not even funny.
Now people take for granted how anime style should look like, yes, it has its charm and averything, but I think the reasons of why it looks the way it does in the first place are deeper than what people would just define as an oblivious nature or style wise, at least in the beginnings of anime itself. Later it just evolved from that.
I'm just sharing my opinion, we could get on a talk about it for pages, but well, I cant help but smile whenever someone states he is japanese when he looks exactly as the european friend next to him. lol
