The plot demanded they were incredibly smart in some parts and agonizingly stupid it others. They really were all to willing to believe it was over at every single opportunity available.

Wasn't that the point? In the pursuit of truth, people tend to stop at a point even though there are obvious unanswered questions. So the team would quit when they thought they had an answer to end everything. Their whole journey was to find the real truth amid the fog of rumors, lies and incomplete truths.
