It appears to be crippled when you actually see him in game, he only uses his right arm while fighting. This is never really elaborated upon as far as I know however.

Artorias sacrificed his shield to protect Sif, so I can assume without it, his shield arm was wide open to attack and easily crippled.

Actually from most interpretations he gave up his shield to Sif because he could no longer wield it. Therefor logic dictates that his arm was broken while using the shield. This is perfectly possible, a blow on the center of the shield, positioned right around where the arm is, with enough force can send shockwaves through the arm that could, theoretically, break the arm. Also given how his elbow acts it could've easily been a blow to his elbow directly as well.
