The trigger on this gun is not used for shooting.
In the game when you click the "trigger" button exactly when hitting the enemy you do extra damage to them.
The supposed "bullet" only causes vibrations for when the blade hits it's target.
Althou I'm guessing the recoil of the blade can also be used to gain momentum, perhaps??

The recoil wouldn't really be able to add any noticeable momentum.
The recoil from firing a gun happens because the bullet is shot forward. If the bullet is not there, the amount of recoil produced is tiny. And if the barrel doesn't go through, which it doesn't appear to, then the amount of recoil produced becomes practically zero.
