I don't know why Anon2 got rated down. A lot of swords had a 'blunt' side them them. They're called "Single Edge Weapons"...Of course...I don't really know the exact reasons why some blades were single edged..

it's because single-edged curved blades (katana and saber) are better at cutting than double-edged straight swords (longsword and broadsword). a double edged straight sword is also not as good at piercing as an epee/rapier. a double edged sword could, however, be used effectively at both slashing and thrusting.

A rapier is a TYPE of double-edged straight sword.

And, as for the exact reasons some blades are single-edged (in other words, why they cut better), a gradating curve has more surface area along the edge and slides against the flesh more easily, extending the duration of cutting done with a single hit. More time spent slicing means a deeper cut.
