8 would not have surpassed 7 because of that. In fact quite frankly, of all the final fantasies out there, 8 would probably be one of the last ones to do that, and I don't mean to say that with hate. I liked the idea of time, having witches/sorceresses as villains, the Garden, etc., but the plot for 8 is horrible, most of the playable characters really don't seem to matter to the entire plot (emphasis on entire) other than Squall and Rinoa and she only started to really matter because she is supposed to succeed Edea. But to me, what really kills the entire plot are two things. First, why Squall and Edea pretty much allow Ultimecia in the end to transfer her power to Edea and thus ultimately repeat the entire cycle at least according to my understanding of the scenario. Shouldn't they have tried imprisoning her just like Adel so that no one else can become a sorceress? Could they not have done that? Secondly, the fact that all the characters except Rinoa knew each other before the game but conveniently forget. This just rubs me the wrong way in terms of how obviously convenient this was. It's as if the writers had to come up with some convenient method to make it so that well yeah all the character here do matter because they used to all live together even though they completely forgot. Granted, I think a lot of final fantasies have characters that don't seem particularly relevant to the entire plot (Red XIII or Cid from 7, Relm, Kimari, Vaan and Penelo, etc.), but 8 to me seems to be the worse culprit especially if you ignore the orphanage.
