He was useless in Dragonball too, not just Z. He stopped doing anything of importance after the Pilaf arc. After that he just spent all his time getting his shit slapped. Hell, he would have lost to the Invisible Man if not for Bulma's tits. And then The Mummy beat the shit out of him. Oh, and the fight between Yamcha and Tamborine was filler btw.

It's said that Gohan was suppose to take over Goku as the hero of the show. You can see all the signs of that happening all over the place in the Buu saga. But because of the fans liking Goku too much. It was pulled at the last second.

Yeah and not only that, but if you watched Gohan tore Buu a new one, I can't remember completely, but either his sayajin blood made him get too cocky, or it was buu capturing him from behind or something like that.
But if you listen, Goku all but says Gohan is stronger than his ss3 form, and Gohan doesn't need all that time to power up anymore, nor does his new form waste power like a sayajin.
