Actually, Anon2, almost all species of molluscs can produce pearls, not just oysters.

Pearls are calcium carbonate formed to seal holes in shells or to contain a parasite within a hardening shell.

The largest known Pearl was found in a Giant Clam, and weighs 14lbs!
