There is a plot related reason for the numbering.

Even though it's an old picture now, I'll leave this comment for those that view this in time to come and don't realise what the numbering is about.

The characters above are all part of "The Future Gadget Laboratory" and the number signifies in which order they were made a member.

The OSHMKUFA is the member order with the first letter of each characters surname - Okabe, Shiina, Hashida, Makise, Kiryuu, Urushibara, Faris & Amane
