You simultaneously supplied them with resources to rape and destroy Asia while sending troops and supplies to fight them in Asia without declaring war, then pretended to be surprised when they got mad that you cut off their resources. And if you want to go back even further, it was you who forced them out of sakoku with military threats, then sat back as they mimicked the ways of the European empires.
