I find it odd that trunks is the tag for Trunks Briefs yet Son Gohan is the tag for Gohan which I'm sure only a select group of people know is that boy's full name.

It's because the current tag system was concocted by and for weebs. Applying Dr. Briefs' surname to the rest of his family is technically a dubism/product of the localization, while the Son name is used a lot more frequently in Japanese DB.
